What actually happens

The two hours

Hour one

Getting off the wall — and balancing

No longer scared of getting off the wall and used to being upside down, but not able to pull yourself away from it. Or you kick up and can't balance. This section is for you.

We'll go over conditioning, mobility, and how to train the body to create balance rather than hoping to catch it.

Hour two

The press

The press is both an elegant way of entering the handstand and something that strengthens the handstand itself. We'll train you through the mobility, strength and movement patterning it needs — and with a cap on spaces there's time to find your limiting point.

You leave with something to train rather than a skill that feels impossible. And no, you do not need to be able to press already.

Who's teaching

This one is led by Tamzen Moulding — 20 years teaching hand balance, currently on the degree course at the National Centre for Circus Arts. Elliott coaches alongside her, so for a group this size you get two sets of eyes and twice the hands-on correction across the two hours.

Lead coach · National Centre for Circus Arts

An internationally renowned hand-balancer and teacher with 20 years of teaching experience, from complete beginners to working professionals. Tamzen teaches on the degree course at the National Centre for Circus Arts, alongside their recreational programme, and works as an acrobatic consultant on award-winning theatre shows. She has taught handstand and dance workshops around the world — retreats, festivals and outreach projects for adults and children.

Her teaching ethos: work with your body, not against it. Every body is built differently, so the job is to find the technique that works for yours. That does not mean ignoring weaknesses — it means you stop trying to force a shape that was never going to fit you.

What you'll need

One thing, and you can test it today. Everything on the day builds on it — the freestanding balance work and the press both start from a solid wall handstand.

✓ Chest-to-wall handstand · 30 seconds

Facing the wall, walked in close, body straight, hips stacked over your shoulders. Held for 30 seconds — pushing tall, not fighting to stay there.

✓ That's it — the rest we build

You do not need a freestanding hold and you do not need a press. If you have those two you will be pushed further; if you don't, this is the session where you start them.

Not there yet?

Build it first — the free Handstand Ladder app has the progression in order, or come to our beginner workshop. Then this one is worth your £50.

A word from a recent workshop
★★★★★

Genuinely the first time handstand training has been broken down in a way that made sense to me. Left knowing exactly what to work on.

Small group, proper hands-on coaching, and a real progression to take home. Worth every penny.

Questions

You should be able to hold a chest-to-wall handstand for 30 seconds. If you're close but not sure, message us before booking and we'll tell you honestly. The press needs that base to build on.

No. Most people on the day cannot press yet — that is the point of coming. Some get their first one, and that's normal. Everyone leaves knowing their exact sticking point and how to train it.

OverGravity Gymnastics in Shadwell, East London — map's above. Shadwell station (Overground & DLR) is the closest; Wapping is also walkable. Full address and directions come in your booking confirmation.

Comfortable workout kit you can move in, a water bottle, and either bare feet or grippy socks. That's it.
